Land Recognition

Land Recognition Statement for Street Sounds Productions

Picture
At Street Sounds Productions, we acknowledge that our work takes place on the unceded ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone peoples, the original inhabitants of the San Francisco Peninsula. We recognize the Yelamu Tribe, who specifically inhabited this area, and honor their enduring connection to the land, despite the profound impacts of colonization and genocide that have affected their communities.

We affirm the sovereignty of the Ramaytush Ohlone and express our deep respect for their ancestors, elders, and descendants. As we engage in creative and collaborative endeavors, we recognize that we are guests on this land, which was never willingly ceded, lost, or forgotten.

In alignment with the formal acknowledgments made by various city departments, universities, and organizations, we commit to taking actionable steps to support Indigenous-led initiatives. We encourage our community to engage with and support the work of the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone and to consider contributions to land tax programs, such as the Shuumi Land Tax or the Yunakin Land Tax, to honor the rightful stewards of this land.

Through this recognition, we strive to foster a greater understanding of the history and ongoing struggles of Indigenous peoples, and we remain committed to promoting respect, empathy, and collaboration within our artistic endeavors.

As we engage in our work across the State of New York, we recognize that we are on the ancestral lands of various Indigenous nations, including the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy), the Lenape, the Mohawk, the Oneida, the Onondaga, the Cayuga, and the Seneca. Additionally, we acknowledge the Shinnecock  and Poospatuck Indian Nation, whose reservation is located in the Hamptons.

The Shinnecock  and Poospatuck Indian Reservations are a vital part of the cultural and historical landscape of Long Island. Despite its location in one of the most affluent areas of New York, the contributions of the Shinnecock and Poospatuck people are often underappreciated and overlooked. Their deep connection to the land, rich cultural traditions, and ongoing efforts to preserve their heritage significantly impact the identity of Long Island.

We honor the resilience and contributions of the Shinnecock Nation, the Poospatuck Nation, and other Indigenous communities across Long Island, as well as those in New York City and throughout the State of New York, committing to amplify their voices and recognize their invaluable roles in shaping the region's history and culture. As we move forward, we strive to cultivate relationships built on respect, understanding, and collaboration, ensuring that the stories and rights of Indigenous communities are acknowledged and respected in all our endeavors.

We acknowledge that the work of Street Sounds Productions takes place on the Islands of Hawai’i, a land that holds profound significance to its Indigenous peoples. We honor and respect the rich cultural heritage, traditions, and stewardship of the Native Hawaiian community, the Kanaka Maoli, and other Indigenous groups who have cared for and nurtured this land for generations. As we engage in our work, we commit to listening, learning, and supporting the voices and aspirations of the Indigenous peoples of Hawai’i. We strive to contribute positively to the community while fostering a spirit of respect and collaboration.
