Welcome to the "Pages to Performance" Program:
A 15-Week Journey into Opera through Music and Literacy!
We invite K-8th grade students to embark on an extraordinary adventure where the worlds of music and literature converge! Our "Pages to Performance" program spans 15 weeks and focuses on creating original operatic chorales, offering a unique opportunity for students to express themselves, enhance their reading comprehension, and develop a deep appreciation for storytelling through music.
The Six-Step Creative Process: Crafting, Composing, Rehearsing, and Performing
1. Choosing a Story: In the first few weeks, students explore a variety of narratives, selecting one that resonates with them. This foundational step fosters a love for literature and enhances reading comprehension as they delve into themes, characters, and emotions.
2. Crafting the Script & Musical Creation: In collaborative groups, students adapt their chosen story into a script while simultaneously composing three original chorales. This dual focus on creative writing and musical composition encourages critical thinking and creativity as they determine how to blend narrative and melody effectively.
3. Staging the Production: As the program progresses, students brainstorm how to bring their operatic story to life on stage. They discuss character development, emotional arcs, and the overall vision of the performance, allowing them to engage deeply with the material and each other.
4. Designing Sets and Props: In the mid-program weeks, students unleash their artistic talents by designing and creating visual elements for their performance, including sets and props. This step emphasizes the importance of visual storytelling and fosters teamwork as they collaborate to create an immersive experience.
5. Rehearsing: In the latter part of the program, under expert guidance, students rehearse their lines, chorales, and staging. They build confidence and refine their performance skills, learning the value of practice, perseverance, and the joy of collaboration as they prepare for the grand finale.
6. Performing: The culmination of their hard work arrives with a live performance of their original opera. This moment not only showcases their talents but also celebrates their achievements, fostering a strong sense of community and belonging among participants.
